If you’re using UFLI Foundations in your classroom, you know how important it is to provide students with consistent opportunities to practice heart words while reinforcing previously taught phonics skills.
As a first-grade teacher, I wanted something that would help my students move beyond reading isolated heart words and begin recognizing those words automatically in connected text.
That’s why I created my Heart Word Fluency Books, designed to align with the UFLI Foundations scope and sequence!
These books combine heart word practice with decodable phrases and sentences, giving students opportunities to apply their phonics knowledge while building reading fluency.
What Are Heart Words in UFLI Foundations?
Heart words are high-frequency words that contain one or more spelling patterns students may not yet have learned.
Rather than encouraging students to memorize an entire word by sight, heart word instruction helps students connect the sounds they hear to the letters that represent them. Students learn to recognize the regular spelling patterns while identifying the parts they need to remember “by heart.”
As students become more familiar with these words, they can recognize them more automatically when reading.
But learning a heart word during a phonics lesson is only the beginning. Students also need opportunities to encounter those words again and again in meaningful reading.
Why I Created My UFLI-Aligned Heart Word Fluency Books
When teaching phonics, I noticed that students needed additional opportunities to practice their newly introduced heart words alongside previously taught phonics patterns.
I wanted a resource that would:
- Follow the UFLI Foundations scope and sequence.
- Provide repeated practice with previously introduced heart words.
- Incorporate decodable phrases and sentences using taught phonics skills.
- Help students develop automatic word recognition and reading fluency.
- Be easy to use during classroom instruction and at home.
Most importantly, I wanted the practice to be purposeful without creating more work for teachers.

How the Books Align with the UFLI Scope and Sequence
Each Heart Word Fluency Book is organized to complement the progression of phonics skills and heart words introduced throughout UFLI Foundations.
As students move through the lessons, they encounter new heart words while continuing to review words they have already practiced.
The phrases and sentences are carefully constructed to incorporate previously taught phonics patterns, allowing students to apply their decoding skills in connected text.
This approach helps bridge the gap between recognizing individual words and reading complete sentences with greater confidence.
The books are designed as supplemental practice, not a replacement for explicit phonics instruction.

Building Fluency Through Decodable Phrases and Sentences
Reading fluency involves more than reading words quickly. Students must develop accuracy, automaticity, and expression.
When students are still working hard to decode every word, reading can feel slow and difficult.
Repeated reading of carefully controlled text gives students opportunities to apply their phonics knowledge and become more efficient readers.
Each Heart Word Fluency Book moves beyond isolated word lists by incorporating heart words into short phrases and sentences.
This allows students to practice recognizing high-frequency words while continuing to decode words with familiar spelling patterns.
With repeated practice, students can begin reading these phrases and sentences more smoothly
Why Spiral Review Matters for Heart Word Automaticity
One of my favorite features of these books is the built-in spiral review.
Instead of introducing a new set of heart words and moving on, each list includes opportunities to revisit previously introduced words.
This repeated exposure is especially important for students who need additional practice to develop automatic word recognition.
The goal is for students to recognize familiar words efficiently so they can devote more attention to understanding what they read.
Each book also includes a cumulative review list, giving students an opportunity to revisit the heart words they have practiced throughout the book.
How I Use Heart Word Fluency Books in My First-Grade Classroom
I wanted these books to be easy to incorporate into routines we already use.
My students keep a copy of their Heart Word Fluency Book at school, and another copy goes home for additional reading practice.
Students work through the lists at their own pace, practicing the heart words, phrases, and sentences.
Each list includes reading hearts that students can use to track repeated readings. An adult can initial the list to document practice.
As students complete their lists, they earn stickers to celebrate their progress. After finishing all 12 lists and the cumulative review, they receive a special reward.
It’s a simple system that encourages consistent practice while helping students take ownership of their reading progress.

Flexible Printing Options for Teachers
Every classroom has different needs, so I designed the Heart Word Fluency Books with flexible printing options.
Depending on the book, teachers can choose from available full-page, half-page, or booklet formats.
These options make it easier to incorporate the resource into reading folders, take-home practice routines, or classroom literacy activities.
The goal is to make heart word practice manageable for teachers and accessible to students.

Supporting Heart Word Practice at Home
Families often want to help their children become stronger readers but aren’t always sure what to practice.
These books provide a simple, structured way for students to practice familiar reading skills at home.
Because the phrases and sentences are designed around previously introduced phonics skills and heart words, students have opportunities to practice material connected to their classroom instruction.
The repeated reading format also makes it easy for families to establish a short, consistent reading routine.
